Prevent the bite
Aedes mosquitoes bite during the day. Empty standing water from pots, coolers and tyres weekly, use repellent, and sleep under a net during daytime naps.
The critical phase
Days three to seven, when fever settles, are the most dangerous. Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding gums, drowsiness or a sudden drop in urine are red flags.
Fluids, not antibiotics
Dengue is a virus. Rest, paracetamol and plenty of oral fluids are the treatment. Never take ibuprofen or aspirin — they increase bleeding risk.
The takeaway
Get a CBC on day three of any fever during the season and repeat it if platelets fall.
